Is wet dog food bad dogs teeth?

I recently got a Shi Tzu, Yorkie mix. When we got it the breeder said not to feed it wet food. So, it was raised on all natural dry dog food.

We also have two other dogs and feed then wet dog food in the morning, and leave for the two dogs dry dog food so they can eat it when ever. However, the Shi Tzu has been getting in the wet dog food, (looks likes he enjoys it.)

So, we decided that we would look in to getting some all natural wet dog food and mixing it with his dry stuff. However, I also hear that wet dog food is bad for their teeth, is that true, even if it’s all natural dog food?

Please give me what you think, if I should or shouldn%26#039;t.

Is wet dog food bad dogs teeth?
Toy dogs have a lot more problems with their teeth than other breeds. Most old toy dogs do not have many teeth left at all.

If you do feed your dogs wet food, you should brush their teeth at least once a week and it will save you lots of money in teeth cleaning down the road. Also you should feed a wet-dry mix, because the dry will help clean the teeth and the wet will add flavor.

The only thing that makes the wet bad for them is it sticks to their teeth and causes their teeth to rot.
Reply:Yes, we%26#039;ve always fed just dry food and the dogs and cats are extremely healthy with no teeth problems.
Reply:Its not neccessarily bad for there teeth but its not good:) Hard dogg food keeps there teeth strong.. It really doesn%26#039;t make a difference:)
Reply:while i%26#039;m not exactly sure of the reasoning behind why wet food has more of an adverse effect on both dogs and cats teeth i do know that when i worked at petco i saw a lot of younger dogs with bad teeth only to see the owner walk over to the wet food aisle. if you would like to continue feeding it to them you should probably look into toothbrushes and some good vet prescribed enzymatic toothpaste. its a pain in the *** but it will save their teeth in the end. also some vets will do full dental exams similar to the ones us people get though they are on the expensive side.
Reply:DRY DOG FOOD ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fyi: use purina dog chow!!!!! And whatever you do DO NOT GET IAMS DOG OR CAT FOOD!!!!!!!
Reply:yes it makes their teeth fall out of thier mouth, well eventually. It leaves alot on thier teeth and it rots them out because of course your dog can%26#039;t brush its teeth. the dry food cleans up thier teeth and reduces plaque . because they have to crunch down the pieces instead of just swallowing it like the wet food allows.
Reply:We have always fed dry but I don%26#039;t think that wet is bad. As long as you have the dry out for them their teeth should be fine.
Reply:Wet dog food is only bad for your dogs teeth because it tends to stick to their teeth and cause tartar and calculus. Dry food is good for your dogs teeth because it doesn%26#039;t stick to the teeth as much, and it also helps scrape tartar off of their teeth. But health wise in other areas, it doesn%26#039;t really matter. If you want to feed your dog wet food, then learn how to brush his teeth. It is not too hard to brush a dogs teeth who will tolerate it. Ask your vet about it and they will show you how to do it. Just buy a small tooth brush, and DOG toothpaste (human toothpaste is bad for dogs). It is ideal to brush every day if you can. But even 2-3 times a week is good. I hope this helps!
Reply:Wet food is ok for dogs. But, they do need to have dry food of some sort to help keep their teeth clean. So if you dogs are fed a combination of wet and dry food, I am sure they are getting what they need. Why don%26#039;t you feed everyone their wet food in the morning and then leave dry down for the rest of the day for snacking or feed them dry food for the evening meal. There really is no need to mix the food together.
Reply:I%26#039;ve been told that dry dog food (a good healthy kind w/high protein, vitamin%26#039;s and minerals) is good and it also helps to keep tartar build-up on dog%26#039;s and cat%26#039;s teeth. Your veterinarian can help you find the best kind for your dog or any animal. I trust Science Diet and Iam%26#039;s food for my dogs. Although, Purina dog food is good too, and less expensive.
